Tips for Wearing Shimmery Makeup
Over the holidays, we noticed that shimmery face products were being featured on the eyes and lips of revelers across the country. We love the way you can dial the intensity up or down, depending on whether you just want a subtle shimmer or a more glittery evening look.
For more about how best to wear shimmer, we turned to some of our trusted make-up and style resources for tips on how to make you shine.
- At the blog Artistrhi, make up artist Rhia Amio addresses the question of what age is too old for shimmery, glittery make up. A lot of older women feel intimidated by shiny looks, fearing it will look “too young,” but Rhia says the key is in the level of glimmer. She says that glitter can sometimes accentuate the lines in more mature skin, so rather than big flakes of shine, she recommends a skin product with a subtle luminescence. It brightens skin without settling into creases and wrinkles.
- Kiss and Makeup lays out four suggestions for how to wear glitter without looking like a disco ball. One easy trick is to make sure to limit your shimmer to one area of your body, rather that dousing yourself in it. If you’ve got glitter on your eyes, it’s best not to also wear it in your hair or on your shoulders. We suggest slicking on some shimmery lip balm over whatever lipstick you’re wearing for an added pop without overwhelming your face.
- Another great tip for going bold without going overboard comes from Bella Sugar. They advocate for self-restraint by choosing a shimmery dusting powder for your shoulders and décolletage, even mixing it with body cream for a subtle, moisturizing glow in the winter. This will accentuate appealing body parts without screaming for attention with chunky glitter.
- When applied properly, shimmery shadow can be an excellent way to make any eye color stand out. In order to make your glittery eye shadow the focal point of your face, Face Good recommends choosing a shadow color that compliments your eye color. For example, if you’ve got brown eyes, then choose any variation of a rich blue shadow color. Then, sweep glimmery color all over your lids with a heavy hand for a dramatic, metallic look. This look is best paired with a neutral lip for celebratory evenings out.
Don’t be afraid to experiment with your own combinations of products and sparkle, just remember to start subtle and work your way up. Shimmery make up is perfect for accentuating all faces; it’s just a matter of adjusting the amount from an understated day look to a fierce evening shine.
