Japanese Cherry Blossom
Japanese Cherry Blossoms are called “sakura” in Japanese, which loosely translates to “Japanese flowering cherry.” Those succulent little cherry fruits, however, come from a different tree altogether, so don’t get them confused. Japanese Cherry Blossoms are delicate and ephemeral blooms, celebrated across the world for their beauty.
The Japanese seem to love it most of all, having elevated it to the status of their national flower. Its popularity is due in part to its ephemeral nature, the blossoms lasting only a short time, which mirrors the Buddhist teachings to which so many in the country ascribe. The flower itself is beautiful, but it also acts as a symbol for the country’s beliefs.
During the Heian Period (794–1191) in Japanese history, “flower viewing” became a popular social activity, and aristocratic families would gather under the flowers to admire their beauty. The blooming of these blossoms is still met with a great deal of fanfare, celebrated by Cherry Blossom Festivals, as well as poetry, artwork, and songs.
Often, Japanese Cherry Blossoms are interpreted as celebrating “feminine” beauty, and it’s interesting to note that Cherry Blossom tattoos are currently quite popular among women.
We have an entire line featuring the delicate scent of Japanese Cherry Blossom, including our Japanese Cherry Blossom Body Butter, which was a top recommendation by Vogue UK. Our Cherry Blossom scent boasts base notes of sandalwood and fruity musk, middle notes including Japanese Cherry Blossom, and star jasmine, and finished with light top notes of Fuji apple and Chinese magnolia. It creates a scent that’s easy to wear in all seasons.
