Get Involved For Earth Day

Earth Day, in case you aren’t familiar, is an event that was created in 1970 by the concerned U.S. Senator Gaylord Nelson of Wisconsin. It was meant to be a grassroots demonstration across the entire nation on behalf on the environment and related issues. Over the years, as with all good ideas, Earth Day has grown to epic proportions, incorporating many countries with even more events.

The best part about a celebration like Earth Day is that every person who chooses to take part can get involved in a way that works for them, and at The Body Shop, celebrating Earth Day fits right in with our Core Value of protecting the planet. There are tons of national and local events, so it’s really easy for anyone to take part. Take these examples, for instance. These are some simple ways to celebrate Earth Day along with hundreds of other people.

  • The Green Apple Festival is a way to give back to your community on Earth Day, and to get something in return. The principle is pretty basic: sign-up to volunteer your time locally, and get the chance to attend a free “thank you” concert along with other volunteers. The festival has worked out a brilliant way to get people involved in Earth Day while interacting with others that have shared interests.
  • The World Wildlife Fund has an important and adorable way to celebrate Earth Day. You can symbolically adopt one of the 90 species that they support, and in return, they’ll send you a little plush toy that looks just like your animal! This is a great way to introduce young children to the idea of conservation on Earth Day, not to mention wind up with a cuddly version of a stingray or Red Panda.
  • The EPA, otherwise known as The Environmental Protection Agency, has dedicated an entire section to Earth Day and events supporting the mission of conservation and education across the country. They’ve created a database with listings of events happening, divided up by region, so you can click on your section of the country and find various ways of celebrating the day. From electronics recycling drives, to green living shows, to hands-on educational events for kids, there is something for everyone to participate in, regardless of the amount of time you can commit.
  • Participating in Earth Day online is beyond simple, thanks to Brighter Planet sponsoring a Tweet-a-Thon. If you’re on Twitter, simply use the hashtag “#earthtweet” to let others know about your conservation efforts or Earth Day activities. Your tweet will go toward reaching the goal of 2000 tweets to raise awareness, and you might just win a couple of fabulous eco-friendly prizes along the way. And while you’re at it, look us up on Twitter, too!
