Halloween Makeup Tips - How to Look Cool and Goulish

Halloween is right around the corner, so don’t wait until the last minute to figure out your creepy disguise. There are a lot of folks out there who go all out for Halloween— donning sometimes hilarious, sometimes-perilous outfits that often look plain uncomfortable. Others go for gore and guts, leaving a red corn-syrupy trail behind them throughout the night.

Sure, costumes can be fun to build and get recognition for, but after a couple of drinks, they can start to lose their magic. So instead of creating a dysfunctional costume this year, why not wear some cool, ghoulish makeup to assure yourself a movable, and comfortable, Halloween. Try these tips to make everyone else blush under their masks.

Eye Makeup – If you are going for something a little more whimsical than spooky, you can glam up your eyes to create a stunning fairy or “elven” look. You can start by using the sort of makeup you wear on a daily basis, but be less inhibited with it. Go wild. That doesn’t necessarily mean more is better, but the emphasis is on the creative way in which you use the makeup you have. Using darker colors will help give you a look that says intrigue or possibly “evil,” so try using black eyeliner and gray eye shadow to accentuate your sinister look. Foundation – Before applying any sort of makeup, make sure your face is clean; you might also want to apply some astringent and a thin layer of petroleum jelly for easy makeup removal. Using a colored foundation can drastically change the way you appear, so try a much paler or much darker color, depending on the look you are going for. For instance, if you are going for a “sexy vampire” look, apply very light colored foundation, but accentuate with dark colors. Conversely, if you are going for a “witch” or “zombie” look, use dark gray or green foundation. Dab it on like you would regular foundation, and blend with your fingers or a sponge to get overall coverage, letting your skin tone show through to give a more “natural” look. For other “witch” makeup ideas, Love To Know.com has some for being a “scary” witch or a “good” witch.

Getting Gross – If you are feeling dark and sinister this Hallows Eve, you might want to gross out your friends. Scars, burns, and other corroding flesh are always shockers. For realistic wounds, you can use a wax designed for Halloween effects, or just get artistic with the makeup you have. One of the best ways to create a scar is by adding layers as you go. Don’t try to get too detailed, though, sometimes a more subtle approach is best. This Halloween, preparation for your costume should be the least frightening part. These are just a few tips to consider, but we’d love to hear about what things you might be doing in order to make sure you are the ghouliest gal at the party. Let us know in the comments. Happy Halloweening!
