Fair Trade Day

With World Fair Trade Day coming up this weekend (May 9th, to be exact), we thought that it was a good time to go back and highlight some of what we consider to be our most important initiatives. If you’re familiar with The Body Shop at all, then you know about how important our Core Values are to us as a business. These are the principles that have guided us in all of our decision-making since Anita Roddick first opened shop in 1975.

We’re happy to note that these days, fairly traded products and materials are becoming more sought after by both consumers and companies alike. When consumers support fairly traded products, or Community Trade products, as we refer to them, then more companies begin to take notice and pay closer attention to the origin of their ingredients.

We always strive to use as many Community Trade products as possible in our makeup and skin care products, and to take a vested interest in the communities that produce these ingredients. One of our major ingredients, cocoa, comes from a co-op in Ghana called Kuapa Kokoo. Boasting a network of over 30,000 small-scale farmers, they produce cocoa products for many companies, including Divine Chocolate, which is responsible for some gorgeous confectionery genius.

The bottom line is that Community Trade products are a more responsible way of helping communities across the globe produce the elements of some of your favorite products. And nothing feels better than an indulgence that has a positive global effect. It’s good karma for your skin!

In honor of World Fair Trade Day, we’ll be giving away some of our favorite products with Community Trade ingredients on our Facebook page. All you have to do to be entered to get this free gift pack is to become a fan.
