How To Dress Your Guy

I’m a big fan of guy’s clothes. They get the layers and the collars and all kinds of fun accessories like ties and cufflinks and argyle socks. And these days, more guys are taking their interest in skincare and personal style to their blogs. If your guy is a little slow in the “how to put a look together” department, then we’ve got a few suggestions to take home to him. Because playing dress up is fun, no matter how old we get!

  • Let’s start at the bottom. Jeans are a staple in almost everyone’s wardrobe, but guys especially. A pair of jeans with a dark wash can go a long way in making a guy look put together and, surprisingly, even professional in a casual workplace. The super dark, almost black washes on the jeans seen here on Shefinds are an excellent example of a great guy’s jean. They’re versatile enough to wear to the office or to watch the game in, so spending a little extra cash on a well-fitting pair will go a long way.
  • Next up: sweaters, especially appropriate for this time of year. But just because sweaters were meant to keep him warm, doesn’t mean that they need to be bulky and unfashionable. Make sure he wears one that fits him slightly more snugly, because any extra fabric will just make him look heavier. Try something that buttons or zips up, like this ribbed sweater we found on How Not To Dress Like A Mom, that way he can pair it with his favorite collared shirt.
  • Ties are one of my favorite guy pieces, and I love shopping for them. They always come in such gorgeous colors and fabrics. I don’t wear them, which adds to the novelty factor, buy I love buying them for the guys in my life to show off my cutting-edge knowledge of tie trends. For example, you don’t need to drop a lot of cash on a new tie. You can visit online discount retailers and get the same look for a fraction of the price. The guys over at Shortshrifted have a couple of reasons why eBay is a good bet.
  • If your guy is having a little trouble with the whole “business casual” thing, help him out with a few reminders. Business casual isn’t the same as Sunday Afternoon Casual, which means no cargo pants or t-shirts in the office, no matter how comfortable they are. If you need a cheat sheet, then visit Be Better Guys for a rundown reminder of the do’s and don’ts.
  • Remember, style is important, but stress to your guy that protecting his most valuable asset, his skin, should be at the top of his list of priorities. It doesn’t do any good to top off a great look with unkempt skin! That means a complete skin care régime that includes SPF protection from the sun’s harmful daily rays, which will keep his skin looking as fresh as his style.
  • Messy, just-got-out-of-bed hair is only acceptable if you’re getting ready to go on stage or rolling into class at 8 am on a Friday morning. Mostly, though, it just makes guys look like they have the grooming skills of a 12-year-old. Make sure your guy keeps his locks in check with a smoothing conditioner and a dab of texturizing wax for that messy but styled look.

Another thing that might help: If you’re looking for specific length of necktie for your man, check out my PDF chart. I compared neckties by 55 major labels and found they range in length from 54-60 inches. My Necktie Guide is here:
