5 Ways for You to Detox Daily
Detoxing became big news this past summer when Oprah decided to cut out caffeine, meat and sugar and embark on a 21-day vegan detox diet. She was inspired by Kathy Freston’s book, Quantum Wellness, to improve her health and spiritual contentment and blogged about her experience. Of course, Oprah has a personal chef to prepare all her meals.
Even so, you don’t have to be a model or a celebrity (I’m obviously neither) to want to rid your body of potentially harmful toxins or give your skin a holistic beauty boost. Anyone can detoxify - all it takes is a renewed consciousness about what you are putting in body.
Ways to support a healthy lifestyle and aid your body’s natural detoxification process:
- Eat organic food when possible. Avoid processed foods that are high in sugar and try to eat five servings of fresh fruits and veggies a day.
- Drink more water. It helps to flush out toxins.
- Minimize the use of chemical-based household products. Natural alternatives do just as good a job at cleaning your dishes and kitchen counters.
- Take care of your liver. It filters your blood and helps eliminate toxins. Herbs like dandelion root, burdock and milk thistle support liver function. (Always check with your doctor first.)
- Sweat it out. Take advantage of the steam and sauna at your gym or health club. This has the added bonus of being a stress-buster too.
Purifying your body can improve your sense of complete wellbeing — mind, body and soul. Be sure to check with your doctor before starting any detox diet, and be sure to read about the possible risks in these articles at MSNBC and CNN.

I love neti pots. When I am stuffed up, I mix some kosher salt in the pot, fill it with tepid water, and flush my nose out. It’s kind of scary how much gunk comes out. But I feel better and can breathe. When I’m sick, it’s nice to do this just so I can breathe, even for a few minutes.
