Cherry Red Trends

Color theory is something that’s been used by artists and designers for years, as a means of conveying a particular concept or emotion through certain combination. It’s not wonder that colors hold a great deal of meaning for us, as humans, and that we subconsciously associate those meanings when we see particular colors.

Red, for example, is a bold color, signifying excitement, courage, desire, and danger. Is it any wonder that people have such strong reactions to it? Walk around wearing a true red on your lips and you’ll see what I mean: lots of attention! So, it’s no surprise that Cherry Red trends are boldly showing up all over the place this spring.

Bold Faced – One trend cropping up on the runways was a ploy to make red lips even more audacious. Leave the rest of the face bare. Not totally bare; you apply a coat of foundation to even the skin tone. Think fresh-faced with a shock of bright red lipstick. As you can see from the photos, it makes a striking statement.

Retro Red – When I think of bold reds, I often think of retro red lipsticks and nail polish that were the only colors to be seen in during the 1940’s and 50’s. Those Rosie the Riveters had a very particular way of doing their Cherry red nails called a half-moon manicure. The little circular spaces near the cuticle are left bare, and the nails are filed into a pointed oval. The result is a unique and distinctive red manicure, sure to be noticed.

Shady Lady – A couple of years ago, a makeup artist friend of mine gave me some advice. “Use red eye shadow on your crease to shade. That’s what Cher does, it’ll make your eyes stand out more.” Like a lot of other women, I was a little nervous. Red eye shadow seems pretty intense, but when you’re using it as a crease color, it’s softened by its neighboring shades. Check the diagram out for exact placement and don’t be afraid to experiment with heavier pigmentation.

Red Badge of Courage – You may have heard of the growing movement of women called The Red Hat Society – women approaching or past the age of 50 who have created a strong network to help build self-esteem and support one another in new experiences. These women have an irrepressible sense of humor and adventure, and they get together to dress up, play, and travel. Sometimes our society sidelines women as they begin to mature, but The Red Hat ladies are reminding the world that older means wiser but not any less visible!
