How To Get The Look: Brunette
We thought we’d start to do some tutorials based on hair color, mainly because it allows us to answer a question that people often ask us: what colors work for me? The thing to remember with makeup is that what “works” for you as far as colors are concerned has to do with a combination of factors including your hair color, eye color, skin tone, and your threshold for taking risks!
The great thing about us brunettes is that we can pull off really bold colors, provided they have the right undertones. Those rich purples and blues that are so popular right now can work for brunettes, along with mochas, rosy pinks, rosy browns, and bluish reds. If bluish red is a little difficult for you to conceptualize, check out the swatch below.

Colors to stay away from if you’re a brunette are anything too pale and pastel. We just can’t pull off those looks most of the time, and they end up washing us out—not the desired result.
Here’s a tutorial to kick it off for my fellow brunettes out there. I’m working with the Nature’s Minerals Eye Color line in this tutorial because they don’t have any fillers, preservatives, or fragrances, which means they are perfect for even the most sensitive skin. Plus, the pigment is delicate enough for daytime wear without looking like a club kid.

First, the swatches of the colors I’ll be using:

Nature’s Minerals Eye Colors –
Begin by using the Nature’s Minerals Eyeshadow Brush to pack shade 03: Golden Emerald onto your lid. The reason that it’s best to use the Nature’s Minerals brushes with these eye colors is because the fibers are very tight and dense, helping to pick up the color more effectively. You’ll get better coverage that way. Leave about ¼ of the outside corner of your eye bare for your shade color.
Next, pick up shade 06: Molten Bronze onto the brush and use it to define your outer V (that space at the outside corner of your eye that you left bare), and to shade your crease. If you want a smokier, evening look, then be a little more heavy-handed with this shade color. It’s very rich and shimmery, so it gives an excellent payout.
Next take shade 04: Pink Opal and very carefully dip your brush into it. Then tap off the excess before blowing on the brush as well. You just want the merest hint of this shadow up along your brows for a delicate highlight that’s not too pink.
Finally, use shade 05: Bronzed Amber just around your tear ducts. Be very conservative with this as well, because you just want a bit of color and sparkle.
Here was my result:

This is a great combination for brunettes with any color eyes, because the hint of green helps make eyes “pop,” as Chase Aston says, while the browns and golds play off our hair color. I also dusted on the Roseflower Blush in shade 01: Pink on the apples of my cheeks for a flush of color that wouldn’t detract from the eye makeup.
Final result!
