Inner Beauty Glows
“Inner beauty” is a common phrase that gets tossed around a lot these days. It’s sort of an empowerment marketing buzzword, and one that isn’t easy to define. We take our definition of inner beauty from our founder, Anita Roddick, who was the original bastion of inner beauty at The Body Shop. She believed so strongly in the concept of inner beauty and strength, that she built a company upon it. One of the Core Values of The Body Shop is to Activate Self-Esteem, and not just for the customers that purchase our products, but for our employees, and the providers of our natural ingredients.
Anita was a woman with soul. A woman who dedicated herself to the well being of others, the health of the planet, and educating the world through responsibly crafted products. She was creative, progressive, kind, and we have plenty of photographic documentation of that high-wattage smile of hers. Here are a few ideas to consider when pondering the beauty that you’ve already got inside.
- Love Your Body – There’s nothing more difficult than trying love your body in a world that tells you it’s “imperfect.” But when you learn to treat your body with respect and to think of it as a vehicle for fulfilling your goals in life, you can begin to accept the unique beauty of the body you were given. Inner beauty comes from being content and happy with yourself as you are, not ten pounds lighter or with a straighter nose. The internet is a wellspring of resources for helping you find information about positive body image, like the work that is being done at an organization called Love Your Body.
- Joie De Vivre! – It’s a simple fact: happy people are fun to be around, because their inner beauty shines through those smiles like a beacon. Happy people like to have a good time, to eat well, live well, love well, and those are the people who truly seem content with themselves and appreciative of what the world has to offer. Happy people are gorgeous because of genuine inner beauty that can’t be bought in a bottle, but it is noticed by everyone they come in contact with.
- Be Confident – Confidence is one of those things that I notice about people immediately. You can tell when someone likes who they are, and not in a cocky or showy way, but someone that feels happy and comfortable in their skin. Their chins are up, they stand straight, and they interact with others in a kind and compassionate way, because they feel secure. If you’re still struggling a bit to find that confidence that’s tucked away inside, try this exercise. Get a dry erase marker and make a list of words that describe your positive traits on your bathroom mirror. That way you can be reminded of them each time you’re brushing your teeth.
