3 Easy Steps To Making Your Dollar Greener

We at The Body Shop have always believed in the importance of symbiosis: the balance that comes from giving and receiving in equal quantities. Because we turn to Mother Earth for so many of the organic ingredients that make our products naturally pampering, we think of it as our responsibility to return the favor by being as eco-friendly as possible.

As a consumer, you have the power to buy from companies that share you eco-friendly ideologies, meaning that you can leverage your buying power to support practices that are good for our environment. By making informed and thoughtful eco-friendly purchases, you can turn something as ordinary shopping into a chance to go greener.

Below are 3 easy steps to make your dollar greener:

  • Investigate – It’s always a good policy to do a little investigating before you shell out your hard earned green for a product. Fortunately, the Internet makes digging up information easier than ever, and that includes getting the dirt on so-called eco-friendly companies and products. Sites like Planetgreen.com can point you in the right direction when it comes to making your skin care more eco-friendly, or find a list of the most in-demand green gadgets with a quick search on green blogs.  Savvy eco-bloggers can even teach you how to save green by being green, and that’s a perk both you and Mother Nature can celebrate.
  • Boycott – In our current struggling economy, consumers are no longer taken for granted as has been the case in the past. These days companies go to great lengths to court your almighty dollar and make certain that it’s their product you’re after. In circumstances where you have the power to choose, your decision not to purchase a product can be as impactful as what you do buy. Boycotting companies or organizations that don’t live up to your eco-friendly standards can send a powerful message about your demands as a conscientious consumer. Organizations like Greenpeace keep an eye out for companies that are in flagrant violation of a commitment to maintaining eco-friendly ideals. They publish quarterly reports about electronics, for example, and what companies are the greenest.
  • Donate – One of the most generous ways your money can go green is by donating directly to organizations that are doing important eco-friendly work. Treehugger.com has made a list of their favorite organizations they have investigated and deemed worthy causes. Consider donating on behalf of yourself or a loved one in lieu of giving a Christmas or birthday gift, because giving back is it’s own gift.
